The Art of Knit and the Lana Sutra Series by United Colors of Benetton

Erik Ravelo

While I was in New York I got the chance to visit Benetton’s Pop-Up Store The Art of Knit in the heart of SoHo -135 Crosby Street-. The place by itself is amazing: colorful, vivid and  warm. A vibrant color spectrum of apparel & accessories is framed by an explosion of wool-covered curiosities, artworks and illustrations.

Besides finding great -quality- wool pieces, such as sweaters, dresses, scarfs, etc... I also got the chance to admire three pieces of the Lana Sutra series created by the Cuban artist and creative Erik Ravelo, whom by the way is the creative mind behind the recent and controversial Un Hate campaign. I got the chance to chat with him... I was -deeply- overwhelmed by his talent.

Lana Sutra is a series of 15 installations conceived as a homage to love and dedicated to the desire for an equal and sharing society. The Lana Sutra is the result of Ravelo’s reflections on the meaning of Kamasutra (kama, pleasure; sutra, a thread which unites). Each installation is made of two plaster sculptures: two bodies embracing and covered in woolen threads in various colors, chosen from the key tonalities present in the United Colors of Benetton Fall-Winter collection, currently available in the stores. The points where the two entities meet and where the colors merge into each other, is yet again a way to symbolize how love can cancel differences and bind humanity as one.
The pop-up store will be open till December 31... so if you live in NYC or you are planning a trip to this city, this store is a MUST.
I took some pictures of my visit to the store and of Ravelo with his art pieces... I hope you enjoy them!
With love,
Gina

Gina
